Hoorn was granted city
rights in 1357. Its location on the edge of the Zuiderzee and at the mouth of
the small river Gouw formed the basis for a trading settlement. The town
developed into a prosperous trading city, not least because of the Dutch East
India Company. This prosperity also left its mark: many buildings from the 17th
century can still be found in the city.
On the map below,
several points of interest are indicated. Not all of these can be visited
during a 1.5-hour city walk. Which ones we visit depends on the starting point
or your preference.
